Wind, Weddings & Wobbly Hats

Hello my Victory Darlings,
This weekend the Isle of Man decided to test us all with sideways rain and gales fierce enough to blow the freckles off your face. Naturally, it was also the weekend of my friend’s wedding at the very grand Amisfield House in St Jude’s.
Jamie, ever the gentleman, tried to shield me with his coat as we dashed from the car, but the wind had other ideas. It caught my hat and nearly carried it off to Jurby. The children thought this was the funniest thing they’d ever seen — Duncan cheering it on like it was a racing pigeon, Annabelle shrieking with laughter, and little Imogen shouting, “Mummy’s flying away!” Not the elegant entrance I’d planned, but certainly a memorable one.
Inside, though, it was all warmth and sparkle. The chandeliers glittered, the bride was radiant, and Jamie looked rather dashing once he’d shaken the rain off. The children behaved… mostly. Duncan tried to sneak two extra slices of wedding cake, Annabelle plaited ribbons into Imogen’s curls, and Imogen spent half the speeches humming to herself as if she was running her own private choir.
By the time the band struck up, Jamie and I even managed a quick dance — me with windswept curls that had given up the fight hours ago, and him grinning at me like I was still the belle of the ball (bless him). Meanwhile, the children twirled about like little dervishes until they collapsed in a heap under the table, surrounded by cake crumbs and confetti.
So here’s Harriet’s weekend wisdom: The weather may blow you sideways, but if you’ve got family laughing beside you and cake on your plate, it’s still a perfect day.
